Khaled Drareni is in jail:” It’s a shame for Algeria”
The indictments Division of the Algiers Court decided on Wednesday, the 25th of March to overturn the investigation judge’s decision to keep the journalist Khaled Drareni under judicial review to place him under a detention warrant.
Noting that the charges brought against Khaled Drareni during the different police interrogations he went through , and which he made public , are exclusively related to the practice of his profession;
Recalling that the article 50 of the Constitution enshrines freedom of press in law and banishes the imprisonment of journalists for press and opinion related offences, even if in Khaled Drareni’s case the offence is disguised as an unfounded accusation of “incitation of unlawful assembly”;
Noting that the issuance of a detention warrant against Khaled Drareni obviously occurs in an exploitation of the judiciary context and sparks a public outcry, especially during this period of public health truce. Algiers Court of Appeal set itself apart 24 hours earlier, assaulting the operation of justice by condemning a political prisoner without a trial;
While pointing out the global trend, recommended by the United Nations, in this pandemic context of COVID-19 to empty the jails of people who can wait for their judgments home, the Court of Algiers suspiciously persecutes a journalist who provides all guarantees to wait for a fair trial while being released.
Considering the prejudicial nature of this persecution against Khaled Drareni ;
We, the signatories of this declaration, call for the immediate release of the journalist Khaled Drareni and for the amnesty from criminal prosecution against him. His only crime is to be a professional reporter covering the Hirak’s demonstrations, from day one, the 22nd of February of 2019.
Despite the sanitary quarantine, we are mobilized/ we stand up to remind by all means, the Algerian government its obligations to protect the physical integrity of its citizens. Khaled Drareni’s imprisonment for his work as a journalist and his dangerous overexposure to the epidemiologic risk, in addition of being deprived of his freedom will remain a black spot on the actual regime, figurehead of “the New Algeria”.
A black spot coming upon the unacceptable arbitrary arrests of the journalists Sofiane Merakchi and Said Boudour.
Journalists have taken a heavy toll to maintain their freedom of speech during the “years of terror”. We are still here and won’t allow such an abuse.
Journalism will never be a crime.
